EXPLORE THE EAST-COAST countryside on foot and it’s like seeing our beautiful land for the first time. Our prize is a three-day self-guided trek with Walk Gisborne for four people. It takes in farm, bush and coastal scenery only 15 minutes’ drive from the city, is tailored for walkers of moderate fitness and enhanced by comfortable country accommodation. Each day’s walk is designed to take between three and six hours.
Overnight accommodation starts at The Girls Brigade Lodge on the banks of the Waimata River (somewhat refurbished since its 1950s’ Scout and Girls’ Brigade days) with the next two nights at The Shearers’ Quarters on Rimunui Station. Both lodges sleep 12 and provide crisp bedlinen, hot showers and meals using local produce from one of Gisborne’s leading chefs. A restorative massage can be ordered at The Shearers’ Quarters.
Return to the city for a final night at the harbour-side Senator Motor Inn with an invitation to sample the region’s renowned vintages at the Gisborne Wine Centre and dinner at the Marina, a fine-dining restaurant converted from an historic ballroom. Taste the experience – that’s the motto of Walk Gisborne and it’s worth the effort.
