WIN: A Trip to South Africa

In May 2007, actors Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman rode their motor bikes more than 24,000 kilometres from John O’Groats at the top of Scotland to Cape Agulhas, South Africa’s southernmost point, being filmed as they went. Their adventures resulted in Long Way Down, showing on SKY’S National Geographic channel on Sundays from the end of August.

Explore, the adventure travel company that worked with Long Way Down on the epic journey through 20 countries for this intrepid pair, has planned a South African expedition for two NZ Life & Leisure readers. Under their expert guidance, our prizewinners will fly to Cape Town and spend a day exploring the Cape Peninsula National Park whose attractions include fur seals, a penguin colony and the Cape of Good Hope. They’ll climb the city’s famed Table Mountain before heading to Stellenbosch, first established in 1679 and now home to some of the New World’s finest wines. From there, the journey continues through the arid landscapes of the Little Karoo to Oudtshoorn, the country’s ostrich-farming centre. Here a visit to the enormous limestone caverns that are the Cango Caves is a highlight.

On the road again the coach follows the coastal Garden Route to Knysna, a favourite adventure activity base and artists’ retreat. This is the place to see seals, dolphins and whales. Knysna’s Tsitsikamma National Park combines lush forest with rugged coastal cliffs and a chance to sample the local seafood. Continue along the Garden Route to the lovely old farming town of Swellendam with Cape Dutch buildings and mountain scenery that looks more Swiss than African. The way back to Cape Town follows the Whale Route along the south coast, stopping at Cape Agulhas where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. The nearby resort of Hermanus is a premier spot for whale watching. The final day will be spent in Cape Town, free for personal exploration and for celebrating the end of a journey that was indeed a long way down.

The prize is valued at more than $14,000, and includes air travel from New Zealand to Cape Town, accommodation, 11-day coach tour and daily breakfast.
