In our last e-newsletter editor Kate Coughlan wondered if school holidays should be held in February and March - the hot months - with only a short break for Christmas and New Year. This seemed to strike a chord, and we received many letters on the subject - thank you very much! We love receiving emails and letters, read them all and try to publish as many as possible.
We couldn't squeeze the four below into the magazine, but to express our thanks, the writers each receive a box of New World Wine Awards winners - a bottle each of the Best Red Wine – Grant Burge Miamba Shiraz 2007 (Australia); the Best White Wine – Stonleigh Marlborough Chardonnay 2008 (New Zealand), and the Best Sparking Wine – Montana Reserve Chardonnay Pinot Noir Brut Cuvee (New Zealand).
Thank you to New World - and to you our readers. Drop us a line at news@nzlifeandleisure.co.nz and if you'd like to sign up to our e-newsletter, click on the link at the bottom left of this website.
Hi Kate (very informal because I feel like I know you),
Couldn't agree more regarding the summer holidays. The weather would be far kinder to the whole family in February. We would have a chance to recover financially from Christmas and work colleagues wouldn't be fighting for the same annual leave each year.
Keep up the great work and thank you for creating something so refreshingly Kiwi.
I take great pride in forwarding (reluctantly at times) my copy to a busy Kiwi living in Seattle. It is a true highlight for him.
Take care and keep fighting the 'holiday change cause'.
Totally supportive.

Yes is the short answer. I have always been a supporter of February for fun in the sun, couldn’t agree more. Children should run in the sun barefoot in February.
Can you please send me another copy of the last issue? I sent my copy home with a very special young woman from the Canadian ski team who JUST LOVED your magazine
Best wishes,

My mother always said that New Zealand children had their summer holiday at the wrong time of the year. A short break over Christmas and New Year (just as you have suggested) and then the major summer holiday at the hottest time of the year in February, March.
We four children were at primary school in the late 1950s!! So the idea has been around for a long time. My mother found it very frustrating that we were all off to school when it was so hot. I felt the same way when my children were at school too.
Perhaps we mothers need to put a very strong argument to the “powers that be”.
Love NZ Life and Leisure (of course!).
Kind regards
Virginia
THE MAY/JUNE ISSUE of NZ Life & Leisure arrived in my country letter-box yesterday. Beautiful. The articles are interesting and the photography is superb. I especially loved looking at The road to nowhere. Stunning. I had to get the map out to check where Lake Heron was as I have never actually been to Erewhon but I have tramped areas to the north and south.
Guy Frederick who took these amazing photos also features with a terrific profile of David Musgrave and wonderful photos of Di Errington’s mighty midget MG car. More, please.
I look forward to getting NZ Life & Leisure so much now I have to wait another two months as I read them so quickly. I’ll send this copy to my sister in Perth. She is excited about receiving them too. We are country girls born and bred.
